  • Don't buy this car!!

I was looking for a commuter car to drive about 20-25 miles daily in Los Angeles traffic, one that was comfortable, quiet, safe, and fuel-conserving. The Toyota dealer pitched this car to me and it seemed like a slam dunk. The car uses liquid Hydrogen fuel, only emits water vapor, has a driving range of 312 miles, is comfortable and fully equipped with high end stereo, Sirius radio, safety sensors, GPS, etc. The selling point was that the car was so heavily subsidized, that the lease was nearly free. The base price of the lease was $349/month for 10K miles/year--for a car that retails for 60K. Toyota provides $15,000 in free fuel, enough to last the 3 year term of the lease, the state provides a $5,000 rebate and use of HOV lane (I found out later this is subject to income test, and I did not qualify). In addition, Toyota provided 3 weeks of free car rental of any car in their fleet over three years and free maintenance (requires servicing in Santa Monica Toyota). The problem with this car is complete unavailability of fuel. Getting fuel was supposed to be (according to the salesperson) a 5 minute experience. The problem is that the available Hydrogen stations seem to be out of fuel the majority of the time. The stations are scattered around LA. I live in Encino and work in Burbank. The nearest Hydrogen stations are in Woodland Hills (7 miles away from home) and Hollywood (10 miles from home and work). Woodland Hills is often 'Offline' and has been 'Offline' for weeks at a time. Hollywood is frequently offline. There is an app for the phone and car that lists all of the stations and 'Online/Offline' status. I have seen times when every single station on my screen was offline. Also, if someone uses the Hydrogen pump ahead of me, the nozzle freezes, and I have had to wait over 10 minutes to allow it to thaw out. The car is perfectly acceptable. The complete lack of Hydrogen infrastructure makes this car unusable. I would never buy this again. I feel ripped off.
  • This car is an excellent value

This is my carpool replacement vehicle as my Prius Plug in green sticker expired. The leasing deal which includes $5K state rebate and free fuel and maintenance for the life of the lease-- plus $.15 per mile over the 36K limit, plus three weeks of free premium rental car (about $1050 value) makes this car an incredible bargain-- probably < 1/3 the cost of a Model 3 Tesla-- which is a terrific car-- but I just didn't like being a slave to the dash screen-- can't even adjust a mirror or use cruise control without scrolling through menus. I live within a 15 mile radius of about 6-7 stations, so the 5 minute fill up is no different than a regular car, but without the Costco gas line (no wait so far). If this is a second commuter car and you're close to at least a few hydrogen stations, this is a great car to lease. Range will probably shake out to about 250 miles with carpool lane driving since it's virtually impossible to achieve the 312 standard unless you're driving down hill with no stops most of the time.
  • Got an estimated 212 miles per full tank of fuel

I am having a 2019 Mirai. I have been having consistently lower and lower on range per full tank every time I refuel. Now it gave me only 212 miles right after refueling. When I first got the car, I got above 270 mile per full tank. then it started giving lower and lower range since then. I took to the Toyota dealer, but they could not find anything; all indicators looked normal. They kept blaming on my driving behavior. I told them this is about an estimated range of a full tank of fuel right after I refueled. You guys estimated 312 miles ranged on the spec. 212 miles is not even closed. I understand the fuel is free, but I don't want to refuel too often. Hydrogen stations are very limited and is a hassle to get to it. Does anyone have similar range issue?
