We have been waiting a long time for Toyota to bring the cherished sports car, the Supra, back onto the streets for our driving pleasure. In fact, some might say at the Irvine Toyota dealer that this is the most exciting and awaited car reveal to date!


Can you believe that Toyota dealer John Staluppi got the first 2020 GR Supra that rolled off the production line for 2.1 million dollars?! Amazingly, all of the proceeds went to charity. To be specific, it went to the American Heart Association as well as the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which helps veterans and their families. These are two amazing causes, and many of the Irvine car dealerships have stated their admiration of Mr. Staluppi’s great generosity. 

John Staluppi also received a cool racing suit and a signed picture of Toyota CEO, Akio Toyoda, who also scribbled his signature on the engine cover of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six of the Supra. 

So why is this car so amazing? 

In January 2019, Staluppi paid the exorbitant price of $2.1 million for the fifth-generation Supra at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The last generation of Supras ceased to be produced in the United States around 1998 and as the Irvine Toyota dealer points out, the 2020 Toyota Supra is the first new Supra in two decades! Although the United States hadn’t seen a Supra in a while, Japan last saw a new Supra in 2002. Back by popular demand, the Supra was and still is, an iconic car. 

As a Japanese domestic market vehicle, it’s rear-wheel-drive was pinnacle to that era. However, Toyota switched things up with their team up with BMW to co-develop the new version. Toyota made sure that the 2020 Toyota Supra still incorporated its signature rear-wheel drive in addition to its inline-six for the new generation of drivers who want to experience this insane car. Therefore, today’s Supra has a Japanese body with German engineering. That is very epic indeed. 

As soon as you get inside the 2020 Toyota Supra at the Irvine Toyota dealer, you can tell (especially if you have an eye for BMW products), that all of the Supra’s switchgear is the same as the German car manufacturer. Also, the chassis is shared with the BMW Z4. The engine is a BMW spec-unit which is a twin-turbo 3.0 liter, inline-six. The same goes for the automatic transmission which has eight speeds. 

How Does It Drive?

The 2020 Supra comes with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic that is super fun to drive. It is the most entertaining rear-wheel-drive sports car to date.

In comparison, the 2020 Supra is about the same size as a Toyota 86, and the Supra’s wheelbase is four inches shorter than the 86. So, get ready to drift in the new Supra. 

The Supra’s weight distribution is close to perfection. The tires are substantial and are made of a specially developed Michelin compound. As a result, expect to enjoy a nice, grippy tire. 

As soon as you start driving the Supra, you will notice that the steering is light. Weirdly, some people say that the steering is as light as a Toyota Camry’s. Although this is surprising, this is quite common in cars with electric steering, and once you get dialed into the Supra you will get used to it. 

The car is a blast to drive with the power and torque the inline-six engine provides. No doubt the car is great in sports mode, but it is also an excellent car for long cruising. The car can drive quietly and peacefully while you enjoy the built-in stereo on your road trip.  

Embrace The Toyota Supra Rebirth

The reappearance of the Toyota Supra is a long time coming. Toyota has known for years that the Supra has a cult following, so Toyota President Akio Toyoda made it a pet project of his to bring the swift, rear-wheeled sports car back, with lots of grandeur and luxury.


Toyota’s sports car heritage is certainly honored with the car’s ability to provide an exciting mix of power, precision, and agility with its rear-wheel-drive design, low center of gravity and optimal weight balance. 

The Supra that Staluppi purchased at the charity auction is one of the top-trim Launch Edition models, which comes standard with a whole range of features including an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation as well as black forged alloy wheels and red mirror caps. 


Has Staluppi gone too far in buying a car that usually sells for $55,250 when he could have bought 38 more 2020 Supras for the $ 2.1 million price tag? Some might say no. At the end of the day, Mr. Staluppi was the first to get his hands on a car that we have been waiting 21 years to see again, has helped two notable charities out, and written the two mill off his taxes.
